Why can I not get voice in messenger with windows 7?

I downloaded Messenger 11, ran the call set up and still no voice get the message that i've lost connection or that i'm not allowed to join conference. Is there a patch for this or am I just one of the lucky ones that gets screwed everytime microsoft comes up with something new?
