Invalid Ip address please help?

My laptop is unable to connect to my router for some reason. I check my mother's laptop and the desktop and they are both able to connect to the internet. I tried to log in on Windows Live Messenger and it told me i had an invalid IP address. What does this mean and how can i connect to the router ?
